Hans J. Wegner

Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) is one of the leading figures in 20th century furniture design. His works embody craftsmanship and design in harmony with organic shapes and functionality. His designs are simple and beautiful at the same time and are often described as organic functionality. Today Wegner's designs are produced by several manufacturers, including Carl Hansen & Sons, Fritz Hansen, PP Mobler, Erik Jorgensen, etc. Hans J. Wegner, originally educated carpenter, visited the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and the School of Architecture in Copenhagen. He received several international awards, for e.g. the Lunning prize in 1951 and the Grand Prix of the Milan Triennale in the same year, the Prince Eugen medal in Sweden and the Danish Eckersberg medal. In 1959 he was made honorary Royal designer for industry by the Royal Society of Arts in London. His furniture is exhibited in many international collections including the Museum of Modern Art in N.Y. and the Die Neue Sammlung in Munich.
